The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers meet at Arrowhead on Thursday Night Football with playoff implications on the line. The AFC West is a tight battle, with the Chiefs currently leading with a record of 11-2. It isn’t a comfortable lead, though, as the Chargers are right behind them at 10-3. Both teams are in a position to secure first-round bye and homefield advantage, so the stakes are certainly high. A win for the Chiefs gives them the AFC West and a bye. The Chargers must win here if they want the division.

With the Patriots and Texans losing last week, the door opens up even further for the Chiefs and Chargers. The Steelers who were considered an elite team in the AFC not all that long ago, suffered a loss as well. A bad loss against the Raiders, which was downright embarrassing in Oakland.

The Steelers have been pushed back to 7-5-1 with the loss against the Raiders. If there is anything for the Raiders to look back at as a positive, they can watch the tape from that game over again. Not much has gone right for Jon Gruden, but that’s one he can smile about. I don’t know if it changes anything about the future of Derek Carr in Vegas, though. Carr can be good in moments, but the inconsistency is going to drive Gruden up a wall.

Meanwhile, the Chargers and Chiefs are coming off wins. The Chargers topped the Bengals by a score of 26-21 in Los Angeles, while the Chiefs won a narrow 27-24 contest against the Ravens in overtime. After going ahead by 3 in overtime, the KC defense ratcheted the effort up and prevented the Ravens from getting close to taking the lead or tying. This was before Patrick Mahomes orchestrated a perfect drive to tie the game up and force overtime.

It wasn’t a typical Mahomes video game numbers performance, but this was against the best defense in the NFL. Mahomes still managed to pass for 377 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception despite what is statistically the best defensive unit in the league. The Chargers had no answers for in their meeting back in Week 1, so we’ll see if they have a plan this time to counter Mahomes. Mahomes put the rest of the NFL on notice right out of the gun in Week 1 against the Chargers. He carved them up for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns, along with 21 yards rushing on 5 attempts. Mahomes developed a nice relationship with Tyreek Hill early, as he connected with him for 2 scores. Kareem Hunt ran for just 49 yards, so they didn’t need him and won’t have him on Thursday night, of course.

The Chiefs ultimately beat the Chargers in LA by a score of 38-28. Scoring points has been no issue for the Chiefs, as they’ve put up an average of 36.2 points per game and 437.5 yards for 1st in the NFL. Mahomes has accumulated college numbers, with 43 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He’s also chipped in with 235 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on the ground. Mahomes is the most dynamic player in the league and has become a must-watch player every week.

They welcome an underrated Los Angeles defense to Arrowhead Thursday evening. I wouldn’t put them in the same category as the Ravens, Bears, or Cowboys, but they’re in the next tier. The Chargers have allowed an average of 331.8 yards per game for 8th in the league. Is that enough to counter this KC offense? They couldn’t in Week 1 and Philip Rivers was unable to take advantage of a bad KC defense.

The Chiefs’ defense hasn’t looked good, statistically or otherwise. However, they have risen to the occasion in spots, including against the Bengals in another primetime game in October and on the road in Cleveland against Baker Mayfield. There’s also a good chance that the Chiefs best defender, safety Eric Berry, will finally be back in the lineup on Thursday. Berry likely provides an immediate spark in the secondary.

This series has been dominated by the Chiefs, with nine straight wins. In their last four games, the Chiefs have beaten the Chargers by an average of 12.75 points per game, while going 4-0 ATS. There are some injury concerns for both teams in this one. The Chargers may be without their starting running back, Melvin Gordon, and backup Austin Ekeler is unlikely to go.

Tyreek and Spencer Ware are also questionable to play, but Hill looks good to go after returning to practice on Tuesday. Expect a close game in the first-half, with the Chiefs’ offense becoming too much to handle late. Arrowhead in primetime should be the difference here. KC pulls away and stamps their tenth win in a row over Philip Rivers and the AFC West.

My official score prediction for the game is a 27-24 win for the Chiefs, with a combined total of 51 points. So if I was putting money behind our prediction, we’d bet the over.
