The 63rd Grammy Awards will be airing on CBS on Sunday March 14th. Let’s dive in and take a look at several key categories: Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.
This blog will cover the likely winners of each category and discuss the bets you should consider placing for betting on the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Album of the Year
It’s likely that Taylor Swift’s Folklore will take “Album of the Year” with odds of -250. You compare this album with Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia at odds of +300, and it’s no contest.
Check out listed odds for “Album of the Year” from BetOnline:
- Folklore – Taylor Swift -250
- Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa +300
- Hollywood’s Bleeding – Post Malone +600
- Everyday Life – Coldplay +1000
- Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition) – Black Pumas +2000
- Chilombo – Jhene Aiko +2000
- Djesse Vol. 3 – Jacob Collier +2000
- Women in Music Part III – HAIM +2000
Folklore spent eight weeks at No. 1 on Billboard 200 chart and was the best-selling album in 2020.
Let’s take a look at the aggregate scores and review scores for the album. AnyDecentMusic? rates Folklore 8.5/10 while Metacritic has the album at 88/100.
As for review scores, Folklore was given 5 stars by The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, and The Daily Telegraph. It was awarded 4 stars by The Independent, AllMusic, and NME.
Folklore made multiple year-end lists, including “15 Best Albums of 2020” from Entertainment Weekly, “10 Best Albums of 2020” from The Los Angeles Times, and “50 Best Albums of 2020” from Rolling Stone.
Folklore is certified Platinum in the United States and New Zealand, Gold in Denmark, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and has accrued 4 million unit sales worldwide.
While Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia is a strong contender, containing the hit “Don’t Start Now” and garnering awards such as “Best International Album” from LOS40 Music Awards, I’m going to have to give the win to Taylor Swift’s Folklore, which is far and away the winner of “Album of the Year” at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Best New Artist
Megan Thee Stallion should have an easy win at “Best New Artist” with odds of -450 compared to the next likely winner, Doja Cat, with odds of +400.
Grammys 2019 Betting Rules
Check out listed odds for “Best New Artist”:
- Megan Thee Stallion -450
- Doja Cat +400
- Phoebe Bridgers +450
- Ingrid Andress +1500
- Noah Cyrus +1600
- Kaytranada +2000
- Smoke +2500
- Chika +3000
Megan Thee Stallion began rising to prominence in 2019, winning “Best Mixtape” at that year’s BET Hip Hop Awards. But it was not until 2020 that she had her big breakthrough single “Savage (Remix),” which received widespread critical acclaim as it was in collaboration with Beyonce.
Also, in 2020, Megan Thee Stallion was featured in Cardi B’s song “WAP” which was nominated at the MTV Europe Music Awards and won at the American Music Awards. She also won “Best Female Hip-Hop Artis” at 2020 BET Awards.
She has won “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” by Apple Music Awards in 2020 and the “Marketing Genius Award” from Libera Awards in 2020 for the success of “Hot Summer Girl” with featured Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign.
Doja Cat, whose odds sit at +400, has had some well-deserved but far more modest successes in the past couple of years. In 2020, she won “New Artist of the Year and Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist” from the American Music Awards and “Best New Act” in the same year from MTV Europe Music Awards.
Megan Thee Stallion seems to be the likely winner of the Best New Artist. Her accolades have come impressively fast and over a short gap of time, in my opinion, leading her to decisive victory in this category over Doja Cat at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Record of the Year
Though I doubt she will win “Album of the Year,” Dua Lipa should have no problem winning “Record of the Year” for her outstanding hit earlier this year, “Don’t Start Now” from Future Nostalgia with odds of -280.
Grammys 2019 Betting Rules
Check out listed odds for “Record of the Year”:
- “Don’t Start Now” – Dua Lipa -280
- “Savage” – Megan Thee Stallion ft. Beyonce +300
- “Black Parade” – Beyonce +800
- “Everything I Wanted” – Billie Eilish +1000
- “Circle”s – Post Malone +1200
- “Rockstar” – DaBaby Featuring Roddy Ricch +1400
- “Say So” – Doja Cat +1400
- “Colors” – Black Pumas +2500
Grammys
Not only is “Don’t Start Now” up for nomination at the 63rd Grammy Awards in this category, it’s in contention for “Song of the Year” and “Best Pop Solo Performance.” AllMusic’s Neil Yeung has described the song as an “immediate earworm.”
In 2020, “Don’t Start Now” won “Favorite Pop/Rock Song” from American Music Awards and “Winning Song” by BMI London Awards.
The song also performed strongly on multiple year-end lists: 2nd on Elle and Gaffa and 1st on Idolator and Variety.
The certification history of “Don’t Start Now” alone is the ultimate selling point as to its likely win for “Record of the Year” at the Grammy Awards: 3x Platinum in Portugal, New Zealand, and the United States, 4x Platinum in Australia, and 5x Platinum in Canada. Impressive!
As discussed earlier, Megan Thee Stallion’s 2020 hit “Savage (Remix)” was a great commercial success winning “Best Hip Hop Song” from MTV Video Music Awards and “Rhythm and Bars Award” from Soul Train Music Awards. Its odds to win at this year’s Grammys stands at +300, not quite enough to allow it to beat out Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now.”
While “Savage (Remix)” performed well in units sold and on the Billboard Charts, I’m going to have to give the win this year to “Don’t Start Now,” as it enjoyed higher success and appealed to a larger audience.
Song of the Year
Since Folklore from Taylor Swift is highly likely to “Album of the Year,” it only makes sense that “Cardigan” from the same album is slated to be the “Song of the Year” at the Grammys with odds of -125 compared to that of +300 with Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now.”
Check out listed odds for “Song of the Year”:
- “Cardigan” – Taylor Swift -125
- “Don’t Start Now” – Dua Lipa +300
- “Black Parade” – Beyonce +500
- “I Can’t Breathe” – H.E.R. +700
- “Everything I Wanted” – Billie Eilish +900
- “Circles” – Post Malone +1000
- “The Box” – Roddy Ricch +1200
- “If the World Was Ending” – JP Saxes ft. J Michaels +1600
“Cardigan” debuted at No. 1 on global Spotify song charts upon its release with 7.742 million streams. This song debuted No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on Billboard 200 chart simultaneously, which is the first time this has happened in the history of music.
“Cardigan” was the winner of “Favorite Music Video” from American Music Awards and topped six other billboard charts: streaming songs, alternative streaming songs, digital song sales, alternative digital song sales, hot alternative songs, and hot rock and alternative songs.
As far as year-end lists go, “Cardigan” finished No. 11 on Billboard’s 100 Best Songs of 2020, No. 6 on Cleveland’s Best Songs of 2020, and No. 3 on Complex’s Best Songs of 2020.
From a songwriting perspective, “Cardigan” touches on the themes of memories of past relationships. The writing is praised as “effectively evoking young love and innocence lost” by Callie Ahlgrim of Insider. This song is highly acclaimed for its writing style and Swift’s ability to convey complex emotions.
In my opinion, “Cardigan” will win easily against Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now.” While the latter was a huge commercial success and much more fun, I would have to give the “Song of the Year” to Taylor Swift’s “Cardigan” as it deals with much more serious subject matter and its writing much more creatively crafted.
